5A – Identifying Local Opportunities

·     1.  “FHP looks for Levy hit-and-run driver”
·   - David Cabral who was only 26 years old died from a hit-and-run accident on the highway. The driver that hit Cabral is still out and about and is being sought after by police.
·   - PROBLEM: An innocent was killed on the highway and the driver who crashed into Cabral is nowhere to be found.
·   - WHO: Cabral’s family/friends, Florida Highway Patrol

·   2.    “GPD: Woman arrested in DUI, hit-and-run”
·  - A woman was caught driving drunk when she hit another car and somehow ended up in the parking lot of ABC Liquor. This woman was arrested and charged with DUI and other charges related to her leaving the scene of an accident.
·  - PROBLEM: Drunk woman driving on the road
·  - WHO: Drunk woman, people around her driving, GPD for having to arrest her.

·     3.  “2 Starbucks shops under construction in Gainesville”
·  - A new Starbucks is being constructed in the new plaza, Commons at Celebration, however, its completion date is still unknown. Additionally, another Starbucks is said to be built on 1614 NW 13th Street which will lead to the older Starbucks on 13th Street to close. The opening of the new Starbucks will include a drive thru and other features that the current Starbucks does not have.
·  - PROBLEM: The current Starbucks on 13th Street will close once the newer one opens.
·  - WHO: Customers who are closer to this Starbucks or feel strongly connected to this location, City of Gainesville planners and/or other city of Gainesville employees who will have to listen to somebody’s complaints about this.

·      4. “ASO: Man, 55, molests child under 12 years old”
·   - A local Gainesville man, age 55, was accused and arrested for molesting a child. The child was under 12 years old and reported the incident to is mom who then took the next step is alerting the police. Supposedly what occurred that night was that the older man asked the child to spread their legs and when they did not do so, he forced them open and proceeded to molest the child. The older man refuses to admit guilt and affirms that he does not have any memory of that incident occurring.
·   - PROBLEM: A young child was molested by a 55-year-old man. However, the man declares that he does not remember what occurred that night and thus will remain in jail until he can pay for bail or until the trial.
·   - WHO: The child, the child’s family, the arrested older man, the arrested older man’s family.

·   5.    “Body in Gainesville's Bivens Arm? Yes, but not as reported”
·   - Bivens Arm is a beloved local nature park in Gainesville where residents can walk, fish, and admire the scenery. A non-Gainesville resident visited Bivens Arm and while fishing noticed something in the water that looked like skeleton bones of a human with the head. He called the Alachua County sheriff's office and reported what he saw and soon the Alachua County sheriff's office sent a diver to check it out. They did end up finding a headless skeleton in the water, however it was from an alligator.
·   - PROBLEM: The Alachua County sheriff's office wasted time and resources to look for a headless skeleton body in the Bivens Arm marsh when it was never there.  
·   - WHO: Alachua County sheriff’s office(ASO) and the citizens that pay tax dollars since it funds ASO.

  1. Hey Nathalie,
    I was glad to read your post about the construction of 2 new Starbuck's because I often buy from there and study for exams there. However, with the great global expansion of Starbuck's it is harder for entrepreneur's to find a niche in the market and an unmet need to fill. I was also extremely sad to read about your hit and run article, there can definitely be improvement in the vehicular safety area of the market.
